Austin, Texas · FY2025-26 amended budget (Nov 2025) · city (county seat & state capital)

Austin — the money trail

The City of Austin — the state capital and Travis County’s seat — is a separate government from the county, run council-manager style: an elected Mayor (Kirk Watson) and 10 district council members set policy, and a City Manager (T.C. Broadnax) runs operations. The bars are the General Fund’s departmental operating budget ($1.49B); Police, Fire, and EMS together are more than 60% of it. Austin’s full budget across every fund is about $6.3 billion — most of the difference is self-supporting utilities like Austin Energy ($1.38B) and Austin Water ($864M). One note on arithmetic: the departments below foot to the $1.49B operating total; the ~$54M gap to the often-quoted $1.54B General Fund is transfers-out and reserves booked fund-wide. Every dollar traces to the city’s open-data budget portal. Click any number to open the source. The pieces add up to the General Fund (departmental operating) total exactly.
General Fund (operating) $1,485,785,895 · Austin Energy (electric utility) $1,384,655,791 · Austin Water (water + wastewater + reclaimed) $863,874,639 · Aviation / Airport $444,931,718 · Transportation & Public Works $213,402,629 · Austin Resource Recovery (trash/recycling) $146,784,957 · Watershed Protection (drainage) $127,863,125 · Development Services $74,987,971 · Convention Center $71,893,248 · Austin Code $35,723,066 · 961,855 residents (2020)

Where these numbers come from

Every figure is from the City of Austin FY2025-26 Approved Budget (as amended Nov 20, 2025) (Open data: Program Budget Operating dataset (data.austintexas.gov, g5k8-8sud), FY2025-26), adopted 2025. This is Austin's own budget — set by Austin City Council (Mayor + 10 districts), not by the county (which no longer governs).
